Drain cleaners in Auckland have a pretty tough job, dealing with all the muck and discarded refuse that’s flushed into our drainage systems. But every now and then, our unblocking experts find something that just makes us smile.
Here are some of the more unseal things we’ve found while cleaning your drains.
You’ve Heard of Icebergs but What Is a ‘Fatberg’?
A ‘Fatberg’ is a colossal deposit of congealed fat and grease that has bonded with flushable wipes and other non-biodegradable material. This causes an obstruction in the drain pipes that requires a professional’s help.
As well as having a bad name, fatbergs can cause hundreds of drainage systems to become blocked, leading to expensive property damage and the need for professional unblocking. To avoid these common blockages, never flush fat, grease, flushable wipes or any other non-biodegradable materials down the toilet.
A Lawnmower
During a CCTV drainage inspection survey, workers were surprised to find a badly rusted and corroded push lawnmower. This oddly placed mower was blocking a street sewerage drain and causing significant overflow into the surrounding streets.
We’re not sure how this sizeable piece of gardening equipment got down here but you can rest assured it was even more difficult to start than your average backyard lawnmower.
A Monopoly Board Game
Drainage contractors didn’t know what to think when they found game pieces from the popular board game Monopoly during a hydro-jetting service. Hotels and houses, as well as rotten wads of Monopoly Money, were found to be causing a blockage in a residential toilet block.
It’s hard to tell how the pieces ended up down the drain but it probably had something to do with what happens when you land on ‘Free Parking’ or whether you get double money for landing on ‘GO!’ Luckily, hydro jetting provides a fast and high-performance solution for drain cleaning of all kinds.
Trampoline
The sewers beneath Auckland are the last place you would expect to find gymnasium equipment but that’s exactly what they found beneath a block of rental flats in Rosebank. It turns out a previous tenant had taken it upon themselves to cut a full sized trampoline into manageable pieces and dispose of it down a local stormwater drain. This resulted in thousands of dollars of damage to the rental properties above and it’s just another reminder of how important it is for landlords to monitor their drainage systems to avoid costly repairs to infrastructure.
Computers
During a camera drain inspection in Auckland’s CBD, workers were perplexed to discover the source of a blocked sewerage system. Several old discarded computer monitors and a badly damaged printer were found to be clogging a drainage system. The computers were circa 1990’s models and had been sitting in the sewers for more than a decade.
